Triphenylphosphine is an important ligand of homogeneous catalysts used in petrochemical and fine chemical production. It is mainly used in organic synthesis, as a polymerization initiator, a raw material for the antibiotic chloramphenicol, and a standard sample for organic microanalysis of phosphorus.

White to off-white crystalline powder, easily soluble in ether, soluble in benzene, chloroform, glacial acetic acid, slightly soluble in ethanol, almost insoluble in water. Melting point is 78.5～81.5℃. Boiling point is higher than 360℃ (measured in inert gas).
